Did You Know?: Computer-Related Injuries
Home computers present a surprising risk of injury.
According to a recent study, over the past 15 years at least 78,000 people showed up at hospitals with injuries caused by computers. Most of the injuries happened at home and involved tripping over cables and getting hit by falling monitors. The majority of computer victims were kids under five.
The study does not include tips for making computers safer. But one common sense move is to keep cables tucked away under the desk, where kids won't trip on them. And be careful to place the monitor away from the table's edge, where it's more likely to fall and cause harm.
